Hello my friends!
Something happened that made me think on reviving this story and include it on my website. I submitted this image as a suggestion for the Chesley Awards 2019 organized by ASFA (http://www.asfa-art.org/ ) a few months ago. The first stage is a suggestion period open to everyone, sadly right now it’s closed and they’re on the second stage where only members of ASFA can make another round of suggestions for their 5 favorite pieces on every category.
”The magic within us” made the “Long list” which means that it was deemed worthy for an official nomination! That itself is such an achievement for me and it made me so happy to be in the same page of suggested artists as art heroes of mine like Julie Bell, Donato Giancola, John Picacio, Yuko Shimizu, and only to name a few! My work is in the Best Monochrome Work (Unpublished)! (yes! that excited I am!). Babs Webb is the other Mexican woman included in that list and her art is so soooo beautiful! (https://www.etsy.com/shop/BabsWebbArt )
So, to celebrate this I thought to share her story on this space for everyone to be able to read it and hopefully feel inspired. Remember, if you are a member of ASFA the suggestion period ends on May 8th, 2019 so you only have roughly 1 day to cast your suggestions! If you have a favorite piece of art you can submit it for consideration!
Thank you for reading my little message of excitement! Below is the story that accompanies this image, I hope you like it!
”The Magic Within Us”
"For some, their guardian spirits are in the world around them. Some have found tremendous dragons to be their companions, others have little or big felines or even wolves and dogs. But there are other souls that haven't found their companions yet and somehow they start feeling hopeless.
- Could it be that I'm not worthy? She asked in her thoughts.
Years passed and when others were happily training with their beautiful creatures, she felt pretty much alone. She was strong, kind and hard working in every task she was involved with, a "natural born leader" as some people called her but in her heart and mind she felt broken.
One night, she saw a senior warrior caring walking with her horse. They seemed happy, complete. In silence she went into the dark of the forest around her and tears just started flowing. Her heart felt as it was about to explode as she just let out a small cry, covered her mouth with her hands to keep the pain from emerging.
Closing her eyes and focused on her breath to calm down, she started feeling warmth in her chest, when she opened her eyes a bright yellow light was glowing right in front of her.
- What's happening? - she was terrified as she understood this bright mist was coming out from her chest.
Her eyes opened wider than ever when she saw this mist and light taking shape, it was... a bird?
She gasped when she realized the bird materializing in front of her and realized it was glowing in beautiful oranges and yellows.
- A Phoenix? - She finally said it. The bird's eyes were looking straight at her and it made her feel like they've known each other forever. The bird stroke her cheek with her head in a sweet gesture.
- You were always here? That's what you're telling me? - The bird kept head softly touching her face.
She then suddenly realized that the warmth that created her Phoenix was the same warmth that she felt every morning when everything seemed dark. When she felt alone and she thought it wasn't worth to make the effort. This warmth made her look at the beautiful days, enjoy the sound of the rain and the smell of the earth. Then, she understood that it might have not been that she wasn't worthy... She was strong, she was kind, she never let anything stop her to do good! She might have been too strong that her fire couldn't go out because she never let herself open the way. She has never cried, her mind always found a reason to stop justifying herself.
She was not alone, she just had to break her mask for a minute and realize she had to break this seal that contained all her feelings, her forced image of strength became real when she understood all this comes from her own heart.
After this night, she was admired as it was the first Phoenix appearing in the present. Everyone understood it faster than herself, she was a rock placing the necessities of others before her, they were all cheering that she was blessed with a Phoenix as her twin soul, her lifetime companion.
She was worthy, she always was."
It's a combination of inks and pencils and some digital fixes and clean up. There will be a cleaner version of the piece soon as there are lots of smudges on the paper =(
It was made with mixed media paper from Strathmore =)
