Hello! This is the first post in my blog, I hope you like it!
“The cala lilies vendor” is a coloring page for my Patreon members ($2+)
In the market of a small Mexican town. - Every damned weekend that girl arrives with those annoying flying animals"- a woman with an empanadas stand. She was talking with her neighbor, an ice cream vendor. - They're a plague! If they get close to me I swear by my sons I'll hit them so hard they will never come back!
The girl was used to town's people talking about them, her little flying friends never left her side. One good day, when her grandparents started their cala lilies field they didn't realize there were small feathered serpents hidden in the woods surrounding their lands. As the cala lilies started blooming, this cute creatures started happily flying around the gorgeous white flowers and somehow they decided to start living in the flower field and feeding from the flowers. Their new home benefited from them living there as they helped pollination, their droppings fertilized the land. The family had grown used to them and happy to share their field with them. It was a win-win situation. The flowers grew big, strong and beautiful thanks to them.
They never left the field, they had found their small, perfect ecosystem between the stems. Years after they settled, it was time for the granddaughter to carry the baskets full of cala lilies to the market every weekend. It was a 2 hr walk because they didn't have other kind of transport. She used to carry a big big basket on her back filled with all the cala lilies she could fit... well, not really. She used to put even more in hopes she could make lots of sales to help her family earn more money. The cala lilies field wasn't a big money maker but they didn't have the courage to sell the land and leave this little animals to fend for themselves if a new owner didn't want the flowers there.
One day she filled her basket as usual, placing a lot more flowers than what she could usually carry. Getting up was a challenge, her knees were feeling weak, her back even more curved than usual. She could walk slowly hiding her struggle to her family until she went into the woods and as she faced the first hill one of her feet slipped and she fell on her knees hurting herself pretty badly. She saw that some of the flowers fell from the basket as well, she wasn't going to be able to pick them.
The girl gathered all her strength and tried to get up, knees burning and bleeding and the basket feeling heavier than before. Suddenly the weight started to feel lighter, she heard little flapping noises around her and saw small shapes moving around the basket. A small group of feathered serpents from the field had heard her crying and ventured outside the field to see if she was ok.
The little creatures grabbed the basket as they could with their tails and started lifting the heavy weight so the girl could stand up again. Some others picked the flowers from the floor and followed the group to the market. The walk was even faster that day!
As they arrived together for the first time to the market it was noticeable that people in the market weren't comfortable having those flying things around their wares. They were almost kicked from the market but the girl stood her ground and there's nothing that close-minded people find more demotivating than a woman who speaks up, right?
Every weekend they followed her to help and they became an incredible team!
As they finished setting up the baskets they weren't even worried about people looking at them in disgust.
- Don't worry my little friends- said the girl sitting in her little chair, she fixed her floral skirt and her rebozo as professionally as she could. The little creatures were flying happily around the flowers as the first customers started coming - We're here to bring our share of beauty to the world, I won't let anyone to hurt you and all the good you bring to our lives".
The ideas behind this piece.
She was quite the challenge and she has just become the most difficult design I've ever made for a coloring page but it makes me so proud to bring this idea to live! And in case you were wondering, those are tiny little dragons inspired on Quetzalcoatl!
The small story has been in my head for weeks and there is at least another related piece I want to make in the near future. It's my little tribute to all the people who protect the magic of the innocent ones around them, the ones that create beauty and put it out for the world to see. It's a little tribute to Mexican indigenous sellers who work hard and try to find ways to use the little that they have around to make a living, but sadly this is not even a good picture of their true lives full of abuse and cynicism that is common in our society.
I started this piece after all the backlash when Yalitza Aparicio and Roma appeared in our sight and part of the Mexican society started insulting her after she appeared in Vogue magazine. I have created 2 pieces before related to Mexico " Sister Earth, Sister Water" and "A boop for the camera mija" and I was excited to bring the third one to life, this time being a young Mexican indigenous woman, strong and loving, hardworking for her family and against all the obstacles her society puts before her she chooses to keep bringing and protecting the beauty and innocence of the flowers and the feathered serpents.
Somehow, this piece is a small spark on my creativity. I kept thinking on my own Dinotopia-inspired Mexican town with feathered flying serpents and other creatures! Oh what a wonderful place would that be!
They all belong to the world I've been strangely creating thanks to my Patreon page. A world where people and creatures (fantastical and normal) live in harmony trying to take care of each other. In my work they're usually women who protect this creatures in a special place I keep calling "a sanctuary" as the greed moves forward to destroy everything that makes our world beautiful.
I imagine this lady being part of the "outside world", a protector of one of the last magical sites with her cala lilies field. Someday she will have to enter the sanctuary where my other ladies live but right now, she's fighting to protect what little magic is left in her world.
I'm not sure if I will offer prints of this version. If you're interested let me know! I think I rather wait for when I finish the painting although I really really put a lot of effort on this piece T^T. I'll let you, the audience, decide!
